Today, we’re chatting with PRO stylist and RosiCurls Salon Owner, Rosi Mercedes. Her bespoke curly + coily hair salon helps clients love their hair again. So, we picked her brain on helping them embrace and maintain their one-of-a-kind curls and coils.
Q: What’s your biggest tip for curly + coily routines at home?
Proper hair cleansing. This means making sure the scalp and hair are thoroughly cleansed. Most of those with curly hair have very dense hair, where if we don’t cleanse properly, product can build up that will dry out the scalp and hair over time.
Q: If there’s one thing to help your clients love the look of their hair, what would it be?
Choosing wisely when they are buying products. Not all products are created equal, and some can really cause dryness and make their hair repel moisture. They should look for products that understand the hair and give it exactly what it needs to be healthy.
Q: What are your top 3 dos for curls + coils?
1. Cut curls when they’re dry. Since most curls have shrinkage when wet, this helps you see where the curls fall and avoid any surprises
2. Do use reparative hair masks/treatments in the salon, and at least once a week at home
3. Do get trims/cuts at least 2-3 times a year
Q: How about your top 3 don’ts?
1. Don’t flatiron curls—embrace their natural texture and bounce
2. Don’t do tight, pulled-back ponytail hairstyles, this creates tension and can result in breakage
3. Don’t wait more than 7 days to wash your client’s hair (remember the buildup I mentioned earlier?)
Q: How does someone know when their curls need some TLC?
When their curls are dry, frizzy, limp, and have a lack of moisture. If they’re having a difficult time detangling and maintaining their wash-and-go routines at home, it’s time for some TLC.
Q: What is your favorite way to make curls + coils pop?
My absolute favorite way to bring my client's curls and coils back to life is using the K18 PRO chelating hair complex. It removes metals + minerals before the rest of the K18 routine—detox shampoo, PRO mist, and mask—to give my clients insane strength, shine, and definition.
In short: having a clean base and using products made with hair in mind are Rosi’s secrets to helping your clients love their hair.
