Biotech development is making waves in the hair world, and we think it’s about time. It’s not just how our K18PEPTIDE™ came to be, but the answer to a better, more sustainable future.
Let’s dive in.
what is biotech?
In case you need a refresher, biotech development fuses science and processes in nature to engineer more effective and sustainable solutions. Instead of using actual ingredients from nature, biotech uses these ingredients as a model to create an alternative in a lab—think lab-grown vs. mined diamonds.
So, what does this mean for haircare? In our case, we researched hair’s biology in the biotech lab to figure out what makes hair healthy and strong. After 10 years of complex bioscience research, the love child of biotech and haircare was born. Our biomimetic K18PEPTIDE™ perfectly restores hair for holistic renewal + lasting results. Here’s how it came to life—with biotech of course:
Because our K18PEPTIDE™ was inspired by the biology happening inside of hair, it mimics hair keratin, seamlessly fitting in and reconnecting breaks as naturally as something produced by hair organically. Because of how it works, it’s also able to work further in the hair fiber than anything before, reaching those innermost layers. This is different than traditional products on the market developed through cosmetic chemistry. These commonly will sit on top of the hair fiber, coating the hair in ingredients, and working to cover up the damage instead of correcting it. And for haircare products like shampoos, traditional hair masks, you name it, these are all formulated in a different kind of lab.
scientific simplicity
By taking the radical path of biotech to develop our molecular repair formulas, we engineered radically simple solutions that understand the biology of hair. The result? Science-backed formulas that work in less time, with less steps, and less frustration. So while the biotech inside your products is complex, it makes your in-salon routine oh-so-simple.
better for you + the planet
Another reason we love biotech is for its minimal impact on the planet compared to cosmetic chemistry and traditional product development processes. When you really think about it, one hair routine using 10 different products is pretty heavy on resource consumption, which is not good for you, your client’s hair, the planet, or your wallet.
A cool way to think about this comes from an example we found in a Byrdie article: if your daily hair serum includes jasmine oil, that means 2,000 pounds of jasmine flowers were extracted + thrown away to make just one 1 pound of oil. And without the exact science of biotech, brands may come across quality control issues with ingredients and final formulations. What happens to those bad batches? They can get tossed out and end up polluting our landfills and water systems. All this puts a lot of strain on our limited natural resources, uses energy, and creates excess waste—which isn’t sustainable.
Now what if that same jasmine oil was developed through biotech? It could deliver the same botanical benefits with more accuracy (read: less waste) and better results—without putting immense strain on our natural resources. We think that’s pretty cool.
To us, biotech is the only way forward—and who wouldn’t want a radically simplified routine that delivers killer results all while being better for our planet?
This is the future of haircare. Pretty cool.
